Family circumstances: Khánh Ly lives with her father and her younger sister, Diệu Hiền, in a house a neighbor has lent them for the time being. Her father works as a security guard at a primary school in Phú Giáo – Bình Dương; her mother left 4 years ago and has not been heard from since.

Based on her academic record and family circumstances, Y Tam has decided to sponsor a scholarship for Tống Khánh Ly for the 2017 – 2018 school year, amounting to 2,300,000 VND + school supplies

Khánh Ly: “I'm not ashamed, because being a security guard is a job too”

Guided by her homeroom teacher, we visited her one sweltering, sunny midday in Bình Dương. Her father was out at the time. The house her father has borrowed is barely a dozen or so square meters, but it is enough for the three of them to live cozily from day to day.

At first sight, Khánh Ly struck us as a tall, thin, sun-tanned girl with a very friendly, warm smile. Her younger sister, Diệu Hiền, gave us a very sweet impression of a bold, rather tomboyish little girl.

Ms. Hiền, her homeroom teacher, told us: Khánh Ly is a little quiet, but she is an excellent student. Every year she completes her studies with distinction and achieves remarkably high results in school and provincial competitions. On top of that, she is a very friendly, sociable girl who often helps the friends around her. Besides studying, she often helps her father with the shopping and cooking, and we hear that every day after school, she and her sister Diệu Hiền pull the school's garbage cart out to empty it, helping their father earn a little extra income.

When asked: If a friend teased you and said your father is just a security guard, would you feel ashamed, or be angry with them? Khánh Ly burst into tears and told us: “I'm not ashamed, because being a security guard is a job too”

Hearing the little girl sniffle was heartbreaking. Perhaps because she has lacked a mother's love since she was small and understands how hard her father's life is, she loves him very much. And perhaps the only thing she can do right now is to study as hard as she can so as not to let her father down, so that he can always be proud of a good child like her.

With her shining heart, her devotion to her father and her determination to overcome hardship in her studies, Y Tam wishes her every success on her path of learning. Y Tam will also walk alongside her on the road ahead, so that she can have a brighter future.

To walk alongside her on the road ahead, we have decided to assign Trần Thị Cầm, currently Y Tam's head of communications, as a mentor on behalf of Y Tam to closely follow Tống Khánh Ly's studies, share her joys, sorrows and difficulties, and encourage her to keep striving in life.
