Every year, as autumn comes knocking, Y Tam volunteers eagerly collect beer cans to make lanterns for ethnic minority children in remote areas. This year we thought the moon season would pass with our lanterns left unlit because of the Covid pandemic, but luckily Y Tam has found a venue where about 400 children can gather, in Huy Khiêm commune, Tánh Linh, Bình Thuận.

The children will surely have a truly meaningful night of fun and a Mid-Autumn Festival lantern parade.

I/ PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

1/ Giving school supplies, including notebooks and pens, to children in hardship…
2/ Holding a Mid-Autumn night with a lantern parade and a campfire for the children
3/ Giving Mid-Autumn gifts such as cakes, candy and milk… to the children
4/ Time, place and schedule:

– The Lantern Festival 2020 program will be held on 3-4/10/2020 (solar calendar), which falls on 17-18/8 on the lunar calendar
– Location: Huy Khiêm commune, Tánh Linh, Bình Thuận
– Schedule: we plan to leave Saigon on the morning of 3/10 and return on the afternoon of 4/10/2020 (Y Tam will send a detailed schedule to the volunteers who sign up for the program)
– Transportation: 30-seat coach

II/ ESTIMATED BUDGET

1/ Giving 400 sets of school supplies to 400 primary school students in Huy Khiêm commune, including:

– 5 notebooks per child, 2,000 notebooks in total x 3,500 VND/notebook = 7,000,000 VND
– 5 ballpoint pens per child, 2,000 pens in total x 1,200 VND/pen = 2,400,000 VND
– Plus rulers, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners if Y Tam can raise them in time

2/ Holding a Mid-Autumn lantern night for 400 children.

– Estimated cost of materials for making lanterns from beer cans: 1,000,000 VND

– Decorations, candles, and costume rental for Chú Cuội and Chị Hằng (the Man in the Moon and the Moon Lady): 3,000,000 VND

– 400 gifts of cakes, candy and milk for the children who take part in the games: 12,000,000 VND

– Contingency costs (if any): 1,500,000 VND

ESTIMATED TOTAL BUDGET FOR THE LANTERN FESTIVAL 2020 PROGRAM: 1+2 = 26,900,000 VND)
