Family circumstances: Quỳnh Anh and Quỳnh Như are sisters who lost their mother 3 years ago, and their father is currently in a correctional facility. They now live with Phạm Thị Ngọc Hương, their paternal grandfather's younger sister. Mrs. Hương works serving at wedding banquets and is getting on in years.

If you ever meet Quỳnh Anh and Quỳnh Như, you will be charmed by these 2 quiet, shy little girls, whose eyes light up, full of spirit and joy, when they talk about their dreams for the future.

Having lost their mother when they were small and having been apart from their father for a long time, Quỳnh Anh and Quỳnh Như miss out on their parents' love, yet they live happily in their grandmother's care, surrounded by the affection of neighbors, teachers and friends. Everyone, at home and at school, praises the two girls as very well-behaved and excellent students.

When we asked about their dreams, the two girls grew very excited and told us all about them.

Quỳnh Anh, who is very good at literature, wants to grow up to be a good lawyer who helps people. Quỳnh Như loves the idea of being an engineer; she hopes to become a food engineer one day and do all the things she dreams of.

Mrs. Ngọc Hương, grandmother of Quỳnh Anh and Quỳnh Như, shared: The girls are little, but they're so good and so independent. I leave for work at 6 in the morning, and they get up, help themselves to rice, eat and go to school. Usually if someone they know is driving to the school, they ask for a ride; otherwise the two of them walk, a little over 1 kilometer. When they get home from school, they eat and then take out their books and study on their own; the two sisters help each other, because I'm old and don't know enough to teach them. And yet every year they bring home certificates of merit. They're so clever!

When we asked: What will happen to the 2 girls later on, when you're older and can no longer work? Mrs. Hương hesitated for a moment, then shared: I'm getting old now. If one day I can't earn any money and can't raise the two of them anymore, I'll probably send them to a social protection center; at least there they can go to school properly, whereas with me they'd have a hard life. I love them, of course, but I have to know what to do to give them a better future, dear.

Listening to Mrs. Hương, all of us felt a lump in our throats. We held the two girls close, feeling both tenderness and admiration: at their age, so many children out there have everything they need, while these two must teach themselves to be resilient and keep trying every day

A promise to walk alongside them on the road ahead

For 2017 – 2018, Y Tam has decided to sponsor their scholarships and walk alongside them on their educational journey ahead. We will also assign a mentor, Trần Thị Cầm (currently Head of Communications), to represent Y Tam in guiding their development, both in their studies and in life.

Investing in education is always a long-term, sustainable investment that leads to change and to the growth of people and communities in the future. That is why Y Tam is so devoted to it.
