Family circumstances:

Having lost her father when she was little, Phương grew up in the loving care of her grandmother and mother. Her small family lives in a charity house donated to them a few years ago. Because her grandmother is old and frail and Phương is still at school, the burden of earning a living falls entirely on her mother. Every day her mother gets up early to work as a hired laborer to earn extra income for the family and pay for Phương's schooling. Phương told us about her daily life: every day, even after dark, she still rides her bicycle along the empty road to help her mother haul rubber latex, helping her earn a little more so that she can stay in school.

We visited Phương on a day of pouring rain. The road to her house was so slippery that even our riders, used to traveling the hilly roads of remote areas, could not keep their balance. Yet every day this petite girl patiently cycles to school without fail, and the result is an excellent academic record, recognized with a certificate of merit that she and her family proudly hang on the wall as an encouragement and the pride of Phương's family.

Talking about her dream, Mai Phương told Y Tam that she wants to become a doctor so she can treat and cure people. Y Tam was very happy that she already has a goal for her education, and we wished her every success in her studies.

Y Tam will sponsor a partial scholarship for Mai Phương so that she can go to school with peace of mind. Investing in education is always a long-term, sustainable investment, which is why Y Tam sincerely hopes to receive the support of our donors.
