Family circumstances:

When we asked where her parents were, she told us they had both gone to work in the fields. Her family has no land and no fields of their own, so her parents work as hired laborers, and on rainy days there is no work at all. Stepping into her home, we saw that the only brand-new and most valuable thing was a bicycle; she proudly told us it was a reward her parents bought her when she earned the “advanced student” title. Then she hurried inside to find her certificate of merit to show us.

Here, achieving outstanding results at school is no simple matter. With so little of everything and roads that are hard to travel, children who work hard and reach such results are very rare. A class has only one or two excellent students and a few advanced students.

That is why she is her parents' joy. Poor as they are, they still did their best to buy her a bicycle to encourage her and to make her journey to school less exhausting.

She told us that her dream is to become a teacher and teach the children of her village. She also shook hands with us and promised that she would study hard to be worthy of the scholarship we gave her.

This year, Y Tam will continue to sponsor a full scholarship for her, walking alongside her as she builds her dreams.
