Family circumstances:

Before we visited him, his teacher told us that he was a very studious, hardworking boy and the best student in his class. And so he was: he showed us the certificates of merit he had earned over the years.

Although his family faces many hardships, he has never missed a single day of school. Every day he walks 3 km to school, barefoot (he has no sandals).

His father, who is of the Tày ethnic group, left Thành and his mother when Thành was very small. Thành had a younger sibling, who drowned as a small child. Now his mother works as a day laborer, taking whatever work she can find, to support him through school.

This rainy season, his mother's work has been very irregular, and mother and son sometimes eat and sometimes go hungry. When we asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, he answered that he wanted to be able to stay in school all the way through. That may be his very first dream, and in his current circumstances and surroundings, making it come true is far from easy.

But Thành was overjoyed when we told him he would receive a scholarship to go to school, so he could keep studying as he dreamed. And Thành promised us he would study as hard as he could so as not to let down the donors who support him.

Investing in education is a sustainable, long-term investment that never loses, because it is a way of giving charity that offers a “fishing rod” instead of a “fish”.
