FAMILY CIRCUMSTANCES:

Her parents are originally from Nam Định and moved to Tân Lập 8 years ago. They have two daughters, Đinh Thủy Tiên (5th grade) and Đinh Thị Minh Thư (2nd grade). Because they have no land and no house of their own, the family still has no household registration in the area. For that reason, they have not been recognized as a poor household and receive no government support of any kind.

The family is currently living temporarily in a house belonging to the rubber plantation. Her mother is seriously ill, and her father works as a rubber tapper. The work is unstable, and on top of that he has to pay for her mother's medical care, so the family is struggling financially.

Exactly one year later, we came back to visit her. It was the same little house, tucked deep inside the vast rubber plantation. Inside, it had badly deteriorated and the roof leaked everywhere. Looking around, we could not see a single thing of value.

When we arrived, Tiên was home alone: her father was out tapping rubber and her mother was in hospital receiving treatment.

Tiên did very well at school this year, so we are continuing her scholarship sponsorship to ease some of the burden on her family.

Investing in education is a sustainable, long-term investment that never makes a loss, because it is a way of giving “a fishing rod” instead of “a fish”.
