Circumstances qualifying for continued scholarship sponsorship from the Y Tam Scholarship Fund, September 2015
Full name: Nguyễn Thị Kim Duyên
Year of birth: 2005
Grade 4 student (moving up to grade 5 this year), Xuân Tâm Primary School – Xuân Lộc – Đồng Nai
Academic record: rated excellent four years in a row
Scholarship: Tuition + other costs: 1,200,000 VND + 15 notebooks + 1 ruler + 2 fountain pens + 2 boxes of ink
Family circumstances:
In 2008, Duyên's little brother fell into a pond. Her mother jumped in to save him, and, unthinkably, both her mother and her brother died that year. Duyên was only 3 years old at the time.
In 2011, her father was taken by cancer as well.
Orphaned of both parents and with no one to turn to, she was taken in by an orphanage in Gia Lai, which raised her and kept her in school through grade 2. In grade 3, her uncle (her father's older brother) brought her home to live with his family.
In grades 3 and 4 she attended Tân Phước B Primary School – Thạch Màn – Đồng Phú – Bình Phước. But her uncle's family was struggling badly: he earned 150,000 VND a day as a hired laborer, and the work was irregular, some days there and some days not, never enough to cover the whole household. So at the start of this past August, the family decided to move back to their paternal hometown in Xuân Tâm commune, Xuân Lộc, Đồng Nai, to make a new start. Duyên had to transfer schools and continue grade 5 there.
Going back to visit her:
Although she has moved to a school in Xuân Lộc, Đồng Nai, we are continuing her full scholarship sponsorship. That is why we decided to go back and visit her.
Xuân Lộc is about 120 km from Saigon, and we rode our motorbikes there to find her, hoping only to see again the little girl we had met a year earlier: a good student, gentle and well-behaved, but quick to feel hurt whenever anyone mentioned her parents.
She was overjoyed to see us. I hugged her close, feeling both sorry for her and happy for her. Though she has lost both her parents, at least she has her uncle and aunt to care for and love her, even though their family is still struggling and has two younger children of its own to raise. Her uncle shared: “I feel for Duyên, having no parents, but she loves learning and works so hard at it, so I do my best to take care of her.”
We will walk alongside her on the road ahead, as long as she keeps doing her very best to fulfill the dream she once shared with us: to become a teacher so she can help students in circumstances like hers today.
Investing in education is a sustainable, long-term investment that never loses, because it is a way of giving “a fishing rod” instead of “a fish”.
