VISITING HIM AGAIN:
A year has passed. In early August 2015, we went back to visit Mai Đại Thành, the young boy from Thạch Màn commune, Đồng Phú district, Bình Phước province.
His house sits tucked away in a lush green cashew orchard. Sadly, a year on, it looks no different: still tattered, old and desolate…. When we arrived he was not home; he had gone with his mother and his two younger siblings to the fields to pick cashews. Only his father was at home, because his health has declined so much that he can no longer work. While waiting for him to come back, we asked how the family had been over the past year.
Very sad news had come to the family: his eldest brother fell ill and passed away a few months ago. Now only three children remain, and Thành is the oldest.
When he came home and saw me, he was overjoyed. I sat beside him and asked about his studies and the memories of the past year. He now looks much bigger, sturdy and strong. He proudly showed me his certificate of merit from the last school year and the achievements he had earned. He still goes to school diligently, even though the school is 8 km away, and he has not missed a single day. His dream is still to go to school and keep studying, and he promised me he would never give up on this dream.
Not only that, he is very hardworking and well-behaved at home and helps his mother a great deal. He is his parents' pride and their hope.
As for us, we are very glad, and we believe that supporting him on his way to school and building his dreams together with him is a true joy. And we know that we have placed, and continue to place, our trust in the right person.
Investing in education is a sustainable, long-term investment that never loses, because it is the charitable way of giving a “fishing rod” instead of a “fish”.
Y Tam sincerely hopes to receive the support of our donors in Vietnam and abroad.
