In this day and age, would anyone believe there are still people going hungry and without enough to wear???

It's true: we only believe it when we see with our own eyes how hungry they are and how they battle illness. Only then can we fully understand them and truly feel for them.

Take the family of 85-year-old Trịnh Thị Trị in Đức Linh, Bình Thuận: there are four people in her household, and all four are ill.

When we visited, she had no rice left to eat. Neighbors told us that for months the family has had to borrow rice just to get by. The whole family depends on the income of her grandchild, who earns just over 2 million VND a month as a hired laborer. That meager sum isn't even enough to buy medicine for everyone, let alone food.

She fell ill and had to be hospitalized urgently, but there was no money left in the house. We hurried to the hospital to see her and gave her 500,000 VND to keep in her pocket, taken from the fund we had just raised by selling lanterns. Choked with emotion, she thanked us….

We told ourselves: there is hardship everywhere and our strength has its limits, so let's simply do whatever we can ….
