Y Tam Launches the “Highland Spring Festival” Program

Just back from the flood-hit area of Central Vietnam in Quảng Bình, Y Tam received an urgent message from Y Tam's representative in Bình Phước

I/ Purpose and meaning

Our story:

Just back from the flood-hit area of Central Vietnam in Quảng Bình, Y Tam received an urgent message from Y Tam's representative in Bình Phước:

“Tân Hưng commune in Đồng Phú district is a remote commune where up to 98% of the people belong to ethnic minority communities. The villagers still have no rice to eat; they don't even have enough food, let alone anything for Tết. The children are starting the second semester with no notebooks to take to school and no warm clothes for the winter. Can Y Tam see what urgent help you can give them…?”

Such a short message, yet so full of worry. Y Tam will certainly not only bring rice and notebooks for the children and villagers here, but also bring a lively, warm spring festival to the people of Tân Hưng.

More than ever, Y Tam is thinking about the radiant smiles of the children and the villagers of the highlands, and taking them as the greatest motivation for the “Highland Spring Festival” program on 14-15/1/2017.

II/ Program activities

1/ Repaint and repair 2 classrooms at the Tân Hưng commune Primary–Secondary School site

– Repaint everything

– Replace broken windowpanes

– Patch damaged spots with cement

ESTIMATED COST: ABOUT 5,000,000 VND

2/ Hold a spring festival for the children and villagers

– A spring campfire celebration

– A spring festival day with 6 folk game booths with prizes and 1 souvenir booth

– A food booth with 4 savory dishes and 2 desserts, plus 1 herbal-drink stand, for about 200 children

– Gifts of cakes, candy and milk for the children

ESTIMATED COST: ABOUT 15,000,000 VND

3/ Give Tết gifts to the villagers and children

– Give 69 Tết gift packages to 69 ethnic minority households in hardship, each including 20 kg of rice and seasonings (cooking oil, sugar, fish sauce…)

Total 1380 kg of rice x 10,000 VND/kg = 13,800,000 VND (seasonings depending on donations received)

– Give 181 school supply packages to 181 children in hardship, each with 5 notebooks and 5 pens, total cost: 4,706,000 VND, consisting of:

+ 1050 notebooks (200 with 5-line ruling, 850 with 4-line ruling) at 3,200 VND each = 3,360,000 VND
+ 200 purple-ink pens at 2,500 VND each = 500,000 VND
+ 705 ballpoint pens at 1,200 VND each = 846,000 VND

III/ Total estimated budget and in-kind donations for the program:

1/ School repairs: 5,000,000 VND

2/ Spring festival: 15,000,000 VND

3/ Tết gifts for the children and villagers: 18,506,000 VND

4/ Contingency for unexpected costs: 3,000,000 VND

– TOTAL ESTIMATED BUDGET FOR THE WHOLE PROGRAM: 41,506,000 VND

IV/ Transport, schedule and venue

1/ Transport: 45-seat coach

2/ Planned schedule:

Friday evening, 13/01/2017 (solar calendar)
+ 21:00: meet at the Y Tam office and set off for Bình Phước
Saturday, 14/01/2017
+ 3:00: arrive and gather at the Tân Hưng commune primary school site
+ 3:30 – 6:30: rest, wash up, breakfast
+ 7:00 – 11:30: paint and repair the school
+ 11:30 – 1:00: rest and lunch.
+ 13:00: level the playground in front for the children, prepare logistics for the festival
+ 18:00: campfire and games with the children
Sunday, 15/01/2017
+ 4:00 – 6:00: prepare festival logistics
+ 7:00 – 11:30: hold the spring festival and give gifts to the children and villagers
+ 12:00 – 16:00: Y Tam wrap-up meeting; certificates of merit and certificates of recognition presented to outstanding members, Board members and volunteers
+ 16:00: get ready to board the coach back to Saigon
+ 20:00: arrive in Saigon

The program needs many members and volunteers to sign up and join hands with Y Tam to repaint and repair the school and put on a truly meaningful spring festival for the children and villagers here.
