Ban village is one of the 18 villages of Thượng Trạch commune, Quảng Bình, home to 40 Ma Coong ethnic minority households.
Here, villagers still let their animals roam free. Waste from cows, goats, pigs, chickens and dogs is everywhere, and the air is heavily polluted. The children still have no clean place to play; they suffer from worms, stunted growth and malnutrition… On top of that, villagers still have no clean water: their main source of water for daily use is the streams. When the rains and floods come, all the waste washes into the streams and pollutes the water, so diarrhea and pink eye break out frequently.
The most urgent need that Y Tam has in mind right now is to help villagers have a cleaner, more civilized living environment by moving the animals out of their living area.
– On 4/12, with the help of local leaders, the border guards, the commune Women's Union and the Thượng Trạch commune Youth Union, a representative of Y Tam, Ms. Nguyệt Đình Khôi, head of the Y Tam team, held a friendly meeting with all the villagers of Ban village to talk about the problems that still need to change for the better. We were delighted that the villagers fully agreed and promised to join hands with Y Tam to create a clean, healthy living environment.
Implementation plan:
Y Tam's plan is to build animal pens, gradually moving livestock out of the living area into a separate, designated area. First come pens for the cows and goats, then for the pigs and chickens…, helping villagers change little by little.
The yard in front will be leveled and cleaned to create a playground and gathering space for the children and the whole village.
After cleaning up the villagers' living environment, Y Tam is also hoping to help them get a clean water well, and we hope the conditions will come together for it.
