A new school year is about to begin across the country. While schools in many places are joyfully preparing to welcome the new school year, we at Y Tam received word that 2 school sites in Đồng Phú – Bình Phước needed help.
Following our heart and our mission, Y Tam immediately set out for Đồng Phú – Bình Phước to carry out a survey, hoping to help the school and the students there.
After two days of surveying, Y Tam found that these two school sites did indeed need urgent painting and repairs, not only so the children can start school on time, but also so that teachers and students can come to school with peace of mind through the coming winter. Besides the two sites needing repairs, Y Tam also saw that the children here study in very difficult conditions, lacking facilities and school supplies.
Details of the two school sites:
School site 2:
Number of rooms: 3 classrooms
Number of students: About 80
Condition of the school: Run-down; needs painting, repairs and more desks and chairs.
The school at site 2 has 3 classrooms, but only 2 of them can be used. The third room is not in use because it lacks many teaching and learning essentials such as desks, chairs, a blackboard, ceiling fans… On top of that, both its windows and its main door seem to be damaged, so the room cannot be used for the time being.
About 80 students currently come to this school every day, in four classes: 2 in the morning (grades 2 and 3) and 2 in the afternoon (grades 4 and 5). Even though the way from home to school is quite long, from 7 km to 8 km, the students here still attend regularly, which gives us all the more motivation to repair the school and give them a better building.
At this site, Y Tam found nearly 10 damaged sets of desks and chairs. The windows and glass doors are broken and dented. The walls are damp and covered in yellow stains. The steps are badly broken and show signs of collapsing and sinking…
Y Tam's mission at school site 2:
Based on what we saw and heard, Y Tam is determined to restore the school as follows:
- Install new desks and chairs to replace the sets that are completely broken
- Repair the damaged desks and chairs that can still be used
- Whitewash and repaint the entire school yellow, with light blue inside
- Install and repair 5 windows and 3 main doors
- Repair nearly 10 sets of desks and chairs
- Build a bookcase for eager learners to encourage the children to learn and explore.
School site 3:
Number of rooms: 4 classrooms
Number of students: About 120
Condition of the school: Run-down; needs repairs
After finishing the survey at school site 2, we went straight on to school site 3, about 5 km away. It is not a long distance, yet we could see that getting to school every day is no easy matter. The children must struggle a great deal crossing rough, rocky slopes and roads riddled with potholes. And just imagine how terrible the road becomes in the rainy, stormy season!
We learned that the school at site 3 has only 4 classrooms for the 120 students who attend every day. It looked much like the school we had seen at site 2. There are 5 sets of desks and chairs that are completely broken and 4 desks without chairs. We also noticed that the teachers' blackboards are nearly 40% damaged. Many glass windows are broken and rusty. The front steps also show signs of collapsing, cracking and sinking…
Y Tam's mission at school site 3:
- Install glass in the damaged windows and main doors.
- Resurface the damaged steps with cement.
- Repair the damaged desks and chairs that can still be used
- Add new desks and chairs to replace the sets that are completely broken.
Besides repairing the schools, we also learned that getting to school is quite hard for the children here; many travel nearly 10 km from home to school. They have very few school supplies, and their families cannot afford to buy them, so they go without a great deal. That is why Y Tam is determined to support them with school supplies such as notebooks, pens, crayons and bicycles… in the hope of helping them attend school regularly. That way, they can look forward to a brighter future, instead of today's assumption that they will end up working in the fields to help their families.
The estimated cost of painting and repairing the 2 school sites is about 12 million VND.
Y Tam earnestly calls on our donors to join hands in “Steps to School, Steps to the Future” and build the children a better school, so they can go to school with peace of mind every day.
