Nguyễn Thị Phước – A Little Girl with Great Determination

Keeping our promise to come back and visit the children after a year, we arrived at Phước's house when it was already dark. The little girl ran out of the house and looked at us a little shyly, but did not forget to break into a big, bright smile for us.

A year is perhaps a long time, long enough for an ordinary child to shoot up. But not Phước: she is still just as thin, small and shy as when we met her a year ago. Perhaps because she has grown up without her father's and mother's love, and was born with a heart condition, she looks smaller and frailer than other children her age. Whatever the case, we were overjoyed and proud when she brought her certificate of merit out of her room to show us. You could say it is a great gift and an achievement for both her and us. It shows that this tiny, determined girl has overcome life's misfortunes and is rising up to pursue her dreams. And we are happy because the seed we planted has borne good fruit, something not every child in her circumstances could achieve.

Ms. Hạnh, her aunt and also her second mother, shared: “Phước may look like that, but she is very good and studious. Whenever she comes home from school, she takes out her books and does her homework; there is never a day she doesn't study. She rarely goes out to play; after studying she just plays with her little brother.”

The conversation went by quickly. It had grown much darker, so we hurriedly reminded her to eat well so she would be healthy enough to go to school, and to study even harder to earn more certificates of merit, scholarships and everyone's affection. We also did not forget to thank Ms. Hạnh for taking her in and caring for her. We hope her family will continue to love and protect her so that her life ahead will be more peaceful and happy. We then took our leave, not forgetting our promise to visit her again before long, bringing a new scholarship so that she can go to school with peace of mind and her family can be relieved of some of the burden of making ends meet in their makeshift life.

Y Tam hopes to receive the support of donors near and far, joining hands with Y Tam to build the education support fund and nurture the young seedlings of our country.
