Our visit: 

We arrived at Nhung's house just as dusk was falling, right when she was busy helping her grandmother out back. Hearing that we had come, the girl hurried to finish her chores so she could come in and talk with us.

Nhung's grandmother said: “She heard the visitors from Saigon were coming, so she's been waiting for you since the afternoon, but you didn't show up. She had only just come inside when you arrived.” Her voice trembled with delight. We knew that both she and Nhung truly treasured this meeting with us.

We looked around the house: nothing had changed apart from the old, worn belongings. The house seemed quiet and empty. Nhung's mother and older brother work far away in Lâm Đồng and had not come home yet. Only grandmother and granddaughter look after the house, relying on each other as they wait for the day the family is together again.

Seeing us, the girl smiled shyly. The tiny Nhung of a year ago has shot up, grown prettier and is becoming a young lady. When we asked about her schoolwork over the past year, she ran into her room and came back with a stack of certificates of merit that truly surprised us. In just one year she had earned 5 or 6 certificates to show us, something to be really proud of.

Sharing her dreams for the future, Nhung said: “For now I'll study as hard as I can so that one day I can become a good accountant, because I really love math.” We were delighted to hear Nhung's dream and wish her every success in achieving it soon. We will also continue our sacred duty of providing her “Scholarship sponsorship for 2016 – 2017”, not only to help her pursue her dream but also to lift some of the burden from her family. With all the effort Nhung is making, and all the effort we are making, we believe that one day Nhung will be an accountant who is not only beautiful and talented but also a shining gem who contributes to society.
