Full name: Đinh Thủy Tiên
Year of birth: 2004
Father's name: Đinh Văn Kháng
Mother's name: Đỗ Thị Hằng
Academic achievements: Completed grade 6 with excellent results. About to enter grade 7 at Tân Lập Lower Secondary School – Tân Lập – Đồng Phú – Bình Phước
Sponsorship funding for 2016: 3,900,000 VND + 6 notebooks of 200 pages, 15 four-line grid notebooks of 96 pages + about 25 blue ballpoint pens
Family circumstances:
Thủy Tiên is the elder of two sisters; her younger sister, Minh Thư, is about to start grade 3 this year. Her family moved from Nam Định to Bình Phước nearly 9 years ago but still has no household registration there. For now, she and her parents live in a rented house in Đồng Phú – Bình Phước.
Life has always been hard for the family, whose food depends entirely on her father's work as a hired rubber tapper. Hardship piled on hardship when Tiên's mother kept falling ill, and the cost of her medicine weighed ever more heavily on her father's shoulders. The family is truly struggling, yet it has not received any assistance from the local authorities.
A reunion
Thủy Tiên was the last child we visited that day on our survey and home-visit trip for Y Tam's education support project.
When we arrived at her home, her mother was resting on the bed. Seeing us, she quickly called the two sisters up from the kitchen. Coming back after a year, we found the house just as bare as before, with nothing of value except the certificates of merit hung proudly on the wall. For her and her family, these seem to be the most precious things of all.
The little Thủy Tiên we once knew has truly grown up into a tall and lovely young lady. The walls of the house she rents are covered with the “massive” collection of academic awards she earned over the past school year.
After chatting for a while, we learned that the house she and her family live in might be taken back by the owner. If that happens, the family does not know where they would go. Tiên's mother is worried.
We said goodbye to her so we could get back to Saigon in time, but not before encouraging her to keep doing even better at school, because studying hard is the best way for her and her family to escape hardship in the future. Y Tam will always walk alongside her on this journey. Our farewell ended with a handshake between her and us: a handshake that stands for her effort, her family's and Y Tam's.
Y Tam wishes her continued effort and success, and hopes she will do well in her studies to be worthy of the love her parents and Y Tam have for her.
Investing in education is always a long-term, sustainable investment that leads to change and to the growth of people and communities in the future. That is why Y Tam is so devoted to it.
Y Tam warmly hopes everyone will join hands and share <3
