I/ PURPOSE AND MEANING
Đoàn Kết village is one of the poorest villages in Đắc Ngo commune, Tuy Đức district, Đắc Nông province. 99% of its people are H’Mông who migrated here from Điện Biên, Lai Châu and Sơn La from the 2000s onward.
We traveled more than 30 km of forest roads to reach the village. By then it was dusk, and we spent the night at the home of the village head. He told us a great deal about the villagers' lives, and the next morning he took us to visit families in the village.
We realized that the distance and the difficult roads have, to some extent, limited the villagers' access to health care and education. The village has no clinic yet; when someone falls ill, they are rarely taken to one because the nearest clinic is quite far away, and in some cases people were taken there but could not be treated in time…
Faced with these hardships, Y Tam has drawn up longer-term plans to support the villagers, such as building a clinic. This will take more time, however, and Y Tam has already proposed it to the local authorities, in the hope that it can get under way early next year.
For now, with just over a month to go until Tết (Lunar New Year), Y Tam hopes to bring the villagers a truly warm and joyful Tết. This year's Highland Spring Festival will be held in Đoàn Kết village on 3-4/2/2018 (18-19/12/2017 on the lunar calendar)
The program includes: repairing a primary school with 7 classrooms, cleaning up the village, wrapping bánh tét (sticky rice cakes), folk game stalls, giving Tết gifts, a campfire party…
