Project: Clean Water Wells for Villagers in Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước
Widespread drought:

It is fair to say that this year has seen the harshest effects of climate change ever: the Mekong Delta in the west is hit by saltwater intrusion, while the southeast suffers drought. Everywhere we go we see scorched grass and trees and abandoned dug wells, and villagers have no clean water to drink, to cook rice with or for their daily needs…

Project: Clean Water Wells for Villagers in Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước Project: Clean Water Wells for Villagers in Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước Project: Clean Water Wells for Villagers in Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước A true story:

We visited a Stiêng ethnic minority family in group 3, Vườn Bưởi hamlet, Lộc Thiện commune, Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước. The husband was out working in the fields, and only the wife and their 2 children were at home

– Sweetie, I've run out of drinking water at home. Could you give me one can of water? – I asked a little one of about 6
– No, ma'am, my dad went and bought that water – the child replied
– But I'm so thirsty, and my house is completely out of water. You have 3 cans; just share one with me
– I can't. My dad has to go really far to get water. If you asked for rice I would give you some, but in my house water is worth more than money. I won't give it to you….

Project: Clean Water Wells for Villagers in Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước
I quietly walked around to the back and looked at the ragged, tattered house where this family lives. They are hungry, they are poor, they are thirsty. But perhaps hunger and poverty are not as frightening as thirst. Right now, the most urgent thing I can do is bring water to them!

I/ IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS

1/ Site data: at 3 locations in 2 hamlets of Lộc Thiện commune, Lộc Ninh, Bình Phước

– Group 3, Vườn Bưởi hamlet: 17 households in a remote area with no drilled well, who have to ask for or buy water
– Group 5, Vườn Cải–Sóc Nắng hamlet: 38 ethnic minority households with no drilled well; there is a temporary water tank provided by the commune, but it does not meet the villagers' daily needs
– Măng Cải hamlet: about 100 ethnic minority households with no drilled well, living close together in a small village

2/ Drawing

Based on these site data, Y Tam drew up a sketch of a community clean water well model for the villagers, fully annotated.

3/ Cost estimate

Y Tam has prepared a detailed cost estimate for drilling 3 wells for the villagers as follows:

– 11/5: work begins in group 3, Vườn Bưởi hamlet, expected to take 4 days
– 15/5: work begins in group 5, Vườn Bưởi hamlet
