A PROJECT TO COOK AND HAND OUT MEALS TO THE POOR

RAISING FUNDS FOR “SHARING RICE”

Project name: Y TAM KITCHEN: SHARING RICE

Project owner: Y TAM CHARITY

Project manager: NGUYỆT ĐÌNH KHÔI (ĐÀO THỊ MINH LỆ)

I/ Purpose and meaning of the project:

We want to share the simplest, most ordinary things, even if it is just a lunch or a loaf of bread, with people in difficult circumstances. They may be patients, or relatives of patients who have come up from the countryside for treatment at the city's hospitals; they may be poor laborers far from home, trying to earn a living in bustling Saigon… We want to bring them a tasty, filling and heartwarming meal, and in return see their joy and smiles, which are also the joy of all of us, the members and volunteers of Y Tam.

There is one difference, however: instead of giving everything away completely “free,” we encourage people to share whatever they wish, perhaps just 1, 2 or 5 thousand dong, an amount within their means, which they themselves drop into the “SHARING RICE” fundraising box. This fund will be used to keep buying rice, both for the kitchen and to hand out to the poor, people with disabilities and elderly people who can no longer work.

We believe in compassion and in the spirit of “the whole leaf wraps the torn leaf, and the less torn wraps the more torn,” where those who have a little help those who have less. This is not only a highly practical project but also one with deep human value and a noble spirit of volunteering.

II/ How it works

  • Each month, Y Tam will cook twice on a regular schedule (two weeks apart) on Sunday mornings and hand out the meals at lunchtime.
  • Meals will be handed out at the Y Tam house and at a few fixed locations, with permission
  • A “Sharing Rice” fundraising box will be placed alongside so that everyone can contribute directly
  • The dishes may change from one session to the next.
  • At the end of each session, a clear income and expense report will be posted on Y Tam's website and fanpage so that everyone can follow and check it.

III/ Time and place:

– Time:

+ Early morning, 4-6 a.m.: Y Tam members go to the wholesale market themselves to buy ingredients for the kitchen
