Program: Repairing the Charity House of Mrs. Trịnh Thị Trị in Đức Linh, Bình Thuận

Recently, Y Tam learned about the circumstances of the family of Mrs. Trịnh Thị Trị, 85, in Tân Hà commune, Đức Linh, Bình Thuận. She lives with her daughter and two grandchildren, and three of the four people in the household are ill. All of the family's living expenses and medicine depend on the income of Dũng, her grandson. Working as a hired laborer, Dũng earns only a little over 2 million VND a month. Life for her family is a real struggle, hard in every way…

10 years ago, the state gave her family a charity house. Today the house has badly deteriorated: the corrugated iron roof has rusted through and leaks everywhere, and there are no doors to close…. When we arrived, we found her busily cooking at the back. We call it a kitchen, but really it is just a lean-to shelter added behind the house for cooking. The neighbors told us that whenever it rains, she cooks wearing a raincoat. It broke our hearts to hear it.

Y Tam representatives visited her family 3 times, and each of those 3 times Y Tam verified everything very carefully before making a decision: to help her family by repairing this charity house. Y Tam will help her put on a new corrugated iron roof, refit the windows and doors, repaint the house and, in particular, build a small kitchen at the back along with a toilet (the family currently has no toilet).

The estimated budget for the whole program is about 20 million VND. Over the past while, Y Tam has reached out to her family's relatives, friends and neighbors, and each of them has given a few bags of cement, a little money, or their labor… Altogether we have already raised 10 million VND. Y Tam members will also go down in person to help her rebuild and repaint the house, saving on labor costs.

So the budget is now only about 10 million VND short. Y Tam very much hopes for the support of donors near and far. If each of us helps a little, her family will have a warm, sound roof over their heads.

In addition, Y Tam needs about 20 volunteers to come and help build and repair her house, so we warmly hope you will sign up to join the program.

Planned schedule:

• Buying materials and groundbreaking: Thursday,  8/10/2015
• Saturday morning: at 3 a.m., Y Tam members will head down to help repair the house
• Sunday afternoon: finish the work and return to Saigon.
